Truth in 24 Blu-ray Collector's Edition Review

By Johan Laubscher

The Truth in 24 film series has been a highlight for Audi fans in recent years. Two of these films have been produced featuring two of the closest contested Le Mans 24 Hour races in recent times.

Truth in 24 I was released in 2009 and covered the 2008 Le Mans 24 Hours, a titanic battle between Audi and Peugeot which was ultimately decided by the weather. The first film was an instant hit followed by the second film being released in 2012. Truth in 24 II featured the 2011 Le Mans which was another close battle with Peugeot and a gap at the finish of under 14 seconds after 24 Hours.

Both films were released as free internet downloads via I-Tunes. Truth in 24 II also had a number of other viewing option as well, you can see our Truth in 24 II Viewing Guide HERE

Along with the opportunity to download the film for free, fans were also able to purchase both films on DVD. Up until now these films were only available as DVD products in hard copy form, however Audi as recently released a High Definition Truth in 24 Blu-ray Collector's Edition. For the first time fans will be able to own this cult classic set of motorsport films in Blu-ray format.

As was the case with the previous DVD versions, the new Blu-ray edition is a wonderful product and a beautiful addition to any collection. Our review of the Truth in 24 II DVD can be read HERE.

The Truth in 24 Blu-ray Collector’s Edition can be purchased via the links included HERE

We have provided a brief review of the Truth in 24 Blu-ray Collector's Edition below:

Truth in 24 Blu-ray Collector's Edition Review

The Blu-ray edition arrives in a very good looking hard-cover case. It looks very special and it is a nice touch that the product is not one of the industry-standard blue Blu-ray cases. The case also has a very good hefty feeling, adding to its high quality first impression.

Inside the case you will find both disks, one each for the two films. In the centre of the case an eleven page booklet is included, which features a brief look at Audi’s Le Mans history and the individual films.

The films themselves are beautifully pictured in High Definition, and allows another, more enhanced, chance to relive these two legendary Le Mans races.

A number of options are available to the viewer. Language and subtitle choices includes four languages, each with its own commentary/audio set on the disks. Bonus viewing material has also been included.

Disk highlights:

Language choice: English, German, Spanish and French
Subtitle choice: English, German, Spanish and French
Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Video: HD 1080p ; 23.976 fps ; 16:9
DVD Menu
Bonus Material
Film: Full length versions of the films (Truth in 24 I = 98min ; Truth in 24 II = 83min)

The Truth in 24 Blu-ray Collector's Edition is certainly a great product, and will be a great addition to any Audi or Sportscar racing fan's collection.

Ten Audi victories at the 12 Hours of Sebring

By Tarek Ramchani

Since the debut of the Audi sportscar program with Le Mans prototypes, the German brand has almost always competed at the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring.

It all started back in 1999, with the all new Audi R8R. The car didn't win but took an honourable third overall. A year later, Audi's Sebring winning legacy started with the Audi R8. The car gave Audi six straight outright wins at Florida's classic from 2000 to 2005. In 2006 a brand new car and new technology debuted at Sebring, the Audi R10 TDI. The car was immediately victorious, winning the race in both 2006 and 2007. The Audi R15 TDI continued a long legacy of Audi cars winning on their debut when Audi won in 2009, and they repeated the debut win with the arrival of the R18 TDI in 2012. The victory last year marked the tenth overall Audi win at Sebring. The 2013 Sebring 12 Hours will be the last LMP1 Sebring, and Audi wants to take their eleventh overall victory as a swansong with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro.

Here is a complete round up of the ten outright victories of the Audi brand at Sebring.

2000:
The race debut of the legendary Audi R8. Two cars entered the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2000. With strong competition coming from Panoz and mainly from the 1999 Le Mans winners BMW with their V12 LMR. Audi won the race with a fantastic 1-2 victory for Audi Sport Team Joest. The winning drivers were Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela and Tom Kristensen. Second and finishing on the lead lap, the #77 Audi R8 with Allan McNish, Dindo Capello and Rinaldo Capello.

2001:
For 2001, no less than four Audi R8 cars entered the 12 Hours of Sebring. Two fielded by the factory Audi Sport Team Joest and the others were privately run cars from Champion Racing and Johansson Motorsport. A stunning 1-2-3-4 Audi win. Victory went to the #1 Audi R8 driven by Dindo Capello, Laurent Aiello and the late Michele Alboreto. Again the sister car finished on the lead lap, the #2 Audi of Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela and Tom Kristensen.

2002:
The 2002 race was the final one for Audi as a full factory team with the Audi R8. Three cars entered the race. Two fielded by Audi Sport Team Joest and the third a privateer car from the American team, Champion Racing. The Audis battled with each other, but also had to attend to the strong Panoz team and the growing competitors of Team Cadillac. After a much fought race, victory went to the #2 Audi in hands of Dindo Capello, Christian Pescatori and Johnny Herbert. The #38 Champion Racing car finished in a strong second place, a lap behind the winning car, with drivers Andy Wallace, Jan Lammers and Stefan Johansson.

2003:
The 2003 season and a new era for the Audi R8. With the full factory Audi Sport program being over, all the teams were privateers on both sides of the Atlantic. For the 12 Hours of Sebring three Audi R8 cars were entered. Team Joest. Champion Racing and Audi Sport UK each fielding a single car. The factory Team Bentley also entered the race with their new Speed 8 GTPs. After a titanic battle between Joest Racing and Champion Racing, the German team was victorious. The #1 Audi R8 took race win with drivers Frank Biela, Marko Werner and Philip Peter. The #38 Champion R8 finished in second on the lead lap with Emanuele Pirro, JJ Lehto and Stefan Johansson.

2004:
For 2004, Joest Racing stopped their sportscar efforts after four straight victories at Sebring. Three Audi R8 cars entered the 12 hour race. Two from Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx, and a single car from Champion Racing. The three cars gave Audi a clean 1-2-3 win. Victory in the end for the #28 Audi R8 of Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx with drivers Allan McNish, Pierre Kaffer and Frank Biela. Champion Racing with Emanuele Pirro, JJ Lehto and Marco Werner finished in second, but five laps down from the winning car.

2005:
The final race of the Audi R8 at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Only two cars entered the 2005 race. The two Audi R8s from team Champion Racing, the reigning ALMS champions. While facing a very small field of LMP1 competitors, the two Champion R8s battled with each other during the whole race. In the end a 1-2 victory with the #1 machine taking the overall win with drivers Tom Kristensen, JJ Lehto and Marco Werner. The #2 Audi was driven by Allan McNish, Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela. A few months later, the Audi R8 won its final ever race at Le Mans 24 Hours.

2006:
A new car and a new technology. Audi made history by debuting in and winning a major international race with a Diesel powered race car. Audi Sport Team Joest was back to Sebring as a full factory team, the only American race for them, as they were preparing Le Mans 24 Hours. The brand new Audi R10 TDI stormed Florida's race taking victory with the #2 car of Allan McNish, Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen. The #1 Audi failed to finish, the car was driven by Emanuel Pirro, Frank Biela and Marco Werner.

2007:
The Audi R10 TDI was back to defend its 2006 crown. Two cars entered by Audi Sport Team Joest (under Audi Sport North America name). Once again the competition wasn't that strong in LMP1. The challenger this time came from the lower LMP2 cars, with factory teams from Porsche and Acura. The Joest team won the race in the end with the #2 Audi R10 TDI of Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela and Marco Werner. The sister #1 car driven by Allan McNish, Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen faced some problems and finished fourth overall, 11 laps behind the winning car. This is the last victory for the Audi R10 TDI at Sebring.

2009:
In 2008 Audi failed to win Sebring for the first time since 2000. The victory went to Penske Racing and their Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 machine. For 2009 Audi Sport replaced the three year old Audi R10 TDI with the new LMP1 challenger, the Audi R15 TDI. Yet again the race debut for the new car was at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Peugeot and new comers from Acura in the top LMP1 class were the rivals to beat. The race against the Peugeots proved to be one of the most fought for Audi in Florida. In the end the #2 Audi R15 TDI won the race overall with drivers Allan McNish, Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen, just ahead of the second placed #08 Peugeot 908. The sister #1 Audi of Lucas Luhr, Marco Werner and Mike Rockenfeller finished in third, 2 laps down.

2012:
After a two year drought at Sebring, Audi Sport Team Joest arrived with the Audi R18 TDI in 2012. Armed with three cars they were determined to reclaim victory at the legendary endurance event. The Audi R18 TDI cars proved to be the class of the field and qualified 1-2-3, a position which they held for most of the opening hours. Various issues dropped the #1 car down the field, driven by Marcel Fässler, Benoît Tréluyer and Andre Lotterer, who ultimately finish 16th overall, 15 laps down. The race came down to a duel between the #2 Audi R18 TDI (Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish) and the sister #3 car of Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Loic Duval. The team mates battled for hours but in the end the #2 crew came home to win the race, leading an Audi 1-2. They won the race by 4 laps, securing Audi's tenth overall Sebring 12 Hours victory.

Truth in 24 on Blu-ray!

By Johan Laubscher

For Audi fans the pair of Truth in 24 films are cult classics. Audi surprised us all with the first edition, Truth in 24 I, after the exciting 2008 Le Mans 24 Hours. At the time it was very positively received by everyone. Following the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours, which was a nail biting action packed race, Audi announced a highly anticipated sequel title, Truth in 24 II, which covered the 2011 event.

These two films were brilliant and featured two of the hardest, and certainly the closest fought, Audi Le Mans victories. Both films have been available for free download in standard and high definition video, along with DVD versions for sale.

Today Audi Sport has announced a Collector's Edition which includes both films on a high definition Blu-ray disk. Fans can now enjoy a 170 minutes worth of video on the disk, including both films and extra content in beautiful high definition video.
The Truth in 24 Collector's Edition is available for purchase at the Truth in 24 website via the Adrenalin (Audi-shop) website and the DukeVideowebsite. A perfect gift for an Audi and/or sportscar racing enthusiast.

We have embedded the three Turth in 24 video trailers below, as a reminder of these brilliant films.

Gallery: Experiencing Le Mans with Audi

By Johan Laubscher

With eleven overall wins Audi have been a phenomenal force at Le Mans for well over decade. The presence of the Audi teams at Le Mans has always been extremely impressive. The facilities set up for the race teams, from the pit buildings to the driver sleeping quarters, are vast and brilliantly done. Along with the set ups for the race team itself there is another almost equally impressive set up from Audi, the facilities set up for the corporate guests of Audi at the race. Audi spends a huge amount of money setting up facilities to entertain their guests, allowing them to watch the race in style.

A large number of Audi guests attend the race each year.
The guest list is comprised of many of the top-brass at Audi along with many guests invited by the various national Audi importers from around the world. Each one of these guests can then experience a number of brilliant facilities set up by Audi around the track.

Below we will take you on a brief experience of seeing Le Mans as a guest of Audi. We will have a look at the various types of facilities and experiences on offer to the Audi guests at the world’s greatest endurance sports car race.

The photos included are from the 2008 event. Audi had a number of facilities on offer that year, similar to the facilities which are still available each year for the corporate guests. It should be noted as well that the facilities and the number of them fluctuates each year but they are always getting better and enhancing the experience. 2008 was also a very special year, the battle of Audi versus Peugeot was dramatic and in a surprise development Audi launched the Truth in 24 film which allowed the chance to relive the event all over again.

Experiencing Le Mans with Audi

The first stage for many guests at Le Mans is arriving at the airport. Le Mans has a small airport just outside the main straight complex. You can actually see your first view of the track from the airport as you look at the main grandstand.

From the airport you are transported to the Audi Racing Hotel. We will get back to the modes of transport below. At the hotel you see an impressive set up. The building is essentially a very large empty hall which is retrofitted as a temporary hotel with set up rooms and facilities. Here the guests can settle themselves before heading to the various on-track attractions.

From the Audi Racing Hotel the guests are free to travel to and from all the various Audi facilities as they wish during the event. A very special transport network is in place to allow the large number of guests to travel around the vastly spaced facilities. A fleet of cars are on offer with drivers chauffeuring the guests. The list of cars is impressive as it included a number of cars, ranging from Volkswagen Transporters and Audi Q7s for larger groups all the way to top line Audi saloons. In 2008 these saloons included Audi A8 and Audi S8 cars.

To start off the on-track Audi facilities there is the Audi Racing Club, so named in 2008, where the guests can view the race from the enclosed building high on the main grandstand. A short elevator ride takes the guests to the elevated vantage point above the grandstand. Here they have the chance to be seated and watch the race. A twenty-four hour food service is also on offer here to take the guests through the long night and day.

Moving away from the Audi Racing Club with a short trip through the underground tunnel, which is under the front straight (a general public area with the correct ticket pass) takes you to the pit complex. One does need special tickets to go directly into the team pit areas on ground level where the team trucks are (a ticket which most of the Audi guests do not have as it is a predominately private and focused area for the team members from the various teams taking part in the race). Moving along the walkways you can now head to the Audi Racing Box above the pit areas. The rooms directly above the Audi pits are open to their guests as another viewing facility. Here more food and drink is on offer along with the chance to have a bird’s eye view above the Audi pits as the cars come in to be serviced.

From just outside the Audi Racing Box you can see the entire pit complex from the second floor. From this view you also get to see the exceptional set up that Audi Sport Team Joest have for their team, including the covered trucks and driver sleeping quarters.

As you move away from the track you can head towards the Le Mans Village, which also has many attractions. Along your way you will see the press facilities set up by all the major teams for members of the press. The Audi press building is always one of the most impressive, however it is generally not open to the Audi guests as it is mainly aimed for the press. In the heart of the Le Mans Village you will see the Audi Racing Garden. A small facility enclosed in a green garden where the guests can view the race on television while being treated to yet more food.

Venturing away from the main grandstand and the Le Mans Village you can head to the last of the large Audi facilities (well at least the last in 2008). Situated on the right side of the track as the race cars approach the Ford chicane, it is arguably the most impressive Audi facility, the Audi Racing Arena. The building is set up and built specifically for Audi guests at this event. Alongside the building there are similar set ups from all the other major factory teams. The Audi Racing Arena is a two-story building which offers a number of attractions. As you enter the facility there are a number of cars on display. Most notably in 2008 the display included the 2007 Le Mans winning Audi R10 TDI and the Audi R8 V12 TDI Le Mans concept car.

As you move through the Audi Racing Arena there is even more food and drink on offer. A number of entertainment options are available: slot car tracks, racing simulators, live music etc. There are also ample socializing areas and seating available. And let’s not forget there is a spectacular view on the second-floor balcony as the race cars brake hard exiting the Porsche Curves for the Ford Chicane.

Along with the various Audi facilities they also offer guests the chance to take part in draws for helicopter rides over the track. The guests can also be transported to the spectator areas at the Porsche Curves for a firsthand experience of this exciting part of the track.

You can also venture away from the Audi facilities and experience the race firsthand as a spectator. There are many attractions, most notably the fair ground and the Le Mans Village. The fairground is a famous Le Mans attraction with many different rides and attractions, and most obliviously, the famous Le Mans Ferris Wheel. The Le Mans Village is the center of the spectator area, here many different shops and television viewing points are available. Two Audi related attractions are also seen in the Village. The Audi Tower and the Audi Racing Shop which sells Audi merchandise to the public during the event. You can also go into the camp sites and experience the Le Mans atmosphere in an area with thousands of fellow enthusiasts.

Visiting Le Mans as one of the Audi guests is an aw-inspiring experience. It is extremely impressive and gives one even more appreciation for the absolute attention to detail that goes into the Audi Le Mans program, both on track with the team and off track with all their guest facilities.
