Video: Audi TT RS Targa Tasmania Highlights

By Johan Laubscher

The Audi Centre Melbourne Audi TT RS was tipped as one of the front runners at the Targa Tasmania this year. The car, driven by Matt and Casey Close, had performed very well this year. With a string of good results they were very confident ahead of the premiere event in the Australian Targa Championship calendar.

They performed very well at the Targa Tasmania, despite technical problems which lost them time. They were up to a comfortable third overall when turbo related problems unfortunately ended their event.

Other Side Productions have been producing great video coverage of the Targa Championship. They have just released another new video featuring the TT RS at the 2013 Targa Tasmania. It is a great video, and the TT RS sounds brilliant with its five cylinder turbo engine

By Johan Laubscher

The 2013 Nürburgring 24 Hours weekend has arrived. To kick off the weekend let us have a look at the track in one of the Audi Sport sport customer race cars which will be competing: An Audi TT RS (SP4T class).

Phoenix Racing and Audi are the reining champions with the Audi R8 LMS ultra. This year eight Audi R8 LMS ultra are taking part in the event fielded by five different teams. A number of other Audis are also entered in the event which is set to be another great 24 Hours at the Green Hell.

Audi Centre Melbourne TT RS closer to Targa Tasmania victory than ever before

Audi Centre Melbourne Press Release

Faster, stronger and more ready than ever for their 10th Targa Tasmania, Matt and Casey Close go into the 22nd running of the iconic road rally full of confidence with a refined and refreshed Audi TT RS.
The revelation of the Targa field over recent years, proving more than capable of battling with the more established Nissan GT-Rs and Lamborghini Gallardo supercars, the 2.5-litre turbocharged all-wheel drive TT RS has continued to perform stronger and more reliably with each outing, with the Closes being global pioneers of the TT RS in road-based competition.

The latest round of improvements has given the Audi Centre Melbourne-backed crew a boost in confidence going into their 10th Targa Tasmania, and fourth with the TT RS.

“We’ve recently cured our ESP gremlins,” Matt explained. “We’ve been improving the TT RS since its debut in 2010, but it’s always had a minor issue that would inconsistently trigger the ESP, where it either robbed us of time, or never provided the exact setting we wanted. We’ve finally isolated the issue and we’re now confident of being able to push from start to finish without an electronic handicap.”

Having finished with two second-outright finishes in their last two events, the Closes know what it takes to win and compete with the likes of multiple Targa winner Tony Quinn (GT-R) and Jason White (Lamborghini). The husband-wife pairing won almost half the stages at January’s Targa Wrest Point, eventually finishing less than a minute behind Jason White’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo; this backed up another second outright at November’s Targa High Country, and it’s certainly encouraging that their two most recent results are also their best.

The TT RS has also benefited from the recent change from a manual to the S-tronic dual clutch gearbox. “An amazing transformation!” enthused Close. “We’re now running a similar gearbox to the GT-Rs and Lambos, and we can now understand why it’s so much quicker. With launch control and seamless changes, the acceleration is relentless and with the paddle shift, there’s the added control of being able to always keep my hands on the wheel. We’re much quicker than we were last year.

“Ah yes, last year…” Running a strong third outright and just seven seconds off the second-placed Quinn GT-R, the Closes dropped a wheel off the road just enough to induce a crash which put them out of the event with just nine stages remaining.

“We know we need to finish this time,” added Close, “and sometimes you need a small off to refine your perspective of where the limit is; we’ve proved that over the past two events. ‘Win it or bin it’ certainly isn’t our mantra; this year we’re pushing for the podium and while outright victory might need a little luck to swing our way, we know we need to be up there to capitalise on it.”

Other improvements have been quite complementary: the TT RS’s braking system is optimised with EBC Brakes, a long-time supporter of Close; there’s also the KW Competition Suspension which have “improved the car enormously”, says Matt, increasing overall body control and driver confidence; KWs are also fitted to the White Lamborghini and an increasing number of top cars.

Rain, hail or shine – and Targa gets them all – the Close & Close Audi TT RS is ready more than ever for the challenge.

VLN: Hard round 2 for Audi teams at the Nürburgring

By Tarek Ramchani

The first race of the 2013 VLN Endurance Championship was held at the Nürburgring Nordschleife today. In actual fact this was the second round of the season, as round 1 was cancelled two weeks ago, due to the bad weather. Three Audi R8 LMS ultra entered the four-hour event with very mixed results.

The best ranked Audi R8 LMS ultra car was the #44 Twin Bisch Motorsport driven by Dennis and Marc Busch. They come home in eight overall. The two other R8 LMS ultra cars faced troubles. The #14 Prosperia-C. Abt Team Mamerow entry, shared by Christian Mamerow and Thomas Mutsch, failed to make it to the finish line. The same fate befell the #15 Phoenix Racing entry in the hands of Johannes Stuck, Ferdinand Stuck and Luca Ludwig. The race results come after a very hard qualifying session, where it was quite obvious that the Audis would not battle for the win.

Race victory went to the factory supported #19 BMW Z4 GT3 from BMW Team Schubert, with drivers Jorg Müller, Dirk Müller and Augusto Farfus ahead of the #35 Porsche 997 GT3 R of Timbuli Racing, third was the #20 BMW Team Schubert Z4 GT3.

It was a far better race for the Audi TT RS and TTS cars in the SP3T class, with a fine 1-2-3 win. The #331 TT RS car from Raeder Motorsport took the class honours and nineteenth overall. The VLN round 2 saw the debut of the Audi RS 5 quattro in SP8 class, more about this car here.

VLN round 2 race results are here.

Norwegian Møller Bil Motorsport Audi TT RS is ready

By Johan Laubscher

Møller Bil Motorsport is a Norwegian team which has been competing with Audis for many years. The team’s primary focus has been on the VLN championship having previously competed with an Audi A4 B7 and an Audi TT. For 2013 the team has stepped up to one of the quattro GmbH developed Audi TT RS race cars. These cars were originally developed for the SP4T class which allowed the 2.5 five cylinder turbo charged engine.

Many of the TT RS teams have decided to switch to a 2.0 four cylinder engine this year, thus allowing them to run in the more affordable SP3T class. The Møller Bil Motorsport TT RS will be one of the SP3T specification cars. The TT RS arrived a few weeks ago and since its arrival the team has been working hard preparing for the 2013 VLN season. The car is in the team’s traditional blue livery and has been revealed in full form this week. The car looks stunning and it is ready for the 2013 season. Unfortunately the 2013 VLN test day was cancelled this weekend due to the weather conditions. However the Møller Bil Motorsport team are on site and have competed further work and seat fitting. They are ready for the first round of the VLN which is set to take place next weekend.

It is great to see more of these TT RS race cars in the VLN and even more so with a long standing Audi team such as Møller Bil Motorsport. We wish the team the best of luck for the 2013 season ahead.

Video: Closer look at the Targa Audi TT RS

By Johan Laubscher

The Audi TT RS of Matt and Casey Close has become a formidable force in the Australian Targa Championship. These tarmac rally events always provide a great spectacle and the TT RS more than holds its own against a field of very potent competitors. The Close pairing have had a very good 2012-2013 season so far, as they are coming off a set of two consecutive second place finishes. This good speed and consistency puts them in a positive position ahead of the Targa Tasmania in April.

Other Side Productions have been producing great video coverage of the Targa Championship. They have just released another new video featuring a closer look at the TT RS and interviews with Matt Close. Enjoy, the sound from the five cylinder turbo engine sounds great on the Australian tarmac stages.

Istook Motorsports with two Audi TT RS in Pirelli World Challenge

By Tarek Ramchani

During 2012 Don Istook and the Arc Audi Racing Program debuted the Audi TT RS in the Pirelli World Challenge. The car has been entered in the GTS class with some ups and downs all season long.

Don Istook is a long time Audi drivers and a regular in North American sportscar racing. The TT RS appeared at Long Beach for first time, round two of the 2012 SCCA sanctioned series. For 2013 the team is set to come back with an extended two car effort.

The first of the two cars will be in the hands of Don Istook himself, he will drive the #01 Audi. His team mate will be Colin Cohen with the sister #03 TT RS. The two cars will again compete in the GTS class. The competition, as ever, will be fierce with strong rivals representing Ford, Chevrolet, KIA, Acura and Porsche.

Don Istook and his crew are working hard preparing the cars ahead of the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg. A lot of improvements are expected for the TT RS twins. We wish the best of luck to Istook Motorsports with their fully privateer Audi effort.

Another great Audi TT RS Targa performance

By Johan Laubscher

The Audi TT RS pairing of Matt and Casey Close achieved another sensational result in the Australian Targa Championship. They finished second overall for the second consecutive event. The latest event was the Targa Wrest Point and as per usual the TT RS team faced fierce competition from other high powered entries.

The Audi has proven to be a great package on the Australian stages, further enhanced by the new S-Tronic double clutch gearbox which was fitted before the previous round. We have included the event review videos below, which have been produced by Other Side Productions. Enjoy the sights and sounds from Targa.

Five cylinders plus a turbo is a magical mixture deep in the heritage of Audi. Currently an Audi TT RS is campaigned by Matt and Casey Close in the Australian Targa Championship. The current 2012-2013 season is well underway and the TT RS pairing were able to race to an overall second place finish at the previous event.

As we wait for the next round of the championship here is the latest video featuring this Audi TT RS. Other Side Productions have produced yet another great video. This particular feature is very special as it is a “pure sound” video wherein you can enjoy that legendary and equally awesome engine note. Enjoy:

Pirelli World Challenge 2012 Audi season review

Photobucket

By Johan Laubscher and Tarek Ramchani

2012 saw the comeback of the Audi brand in the Pirelli World Challenge. The Audi R8 LMS was introduced for the first time in North American sportscar racing. It was in hands of series regulars, GMG Racing. Another Audi effort came from Don Istook with a fully privately built and run Audi TT RS in the lower GTS class. Both Audi teams had a positive 2012 season in the SCCA sanctioned series. Here is our full review of this year's competition.

GMG Racing and Don Istook did not race at the season opener held at St. Petersburg. GMG's R8 LMS and Istook's TT RS joined the series at round two on the streets of Long Beach as a support event to both the IndyCar Series and the American Le Mans Series.

Round 2: Long Beach, California
The Pirelli World Challenge at Long Beach saw the debut of two Audis during the second round of the series. The event witnessed the American debut of the Audi R8 LMS in GT3 specification, however modified to fit the SCCA regulations. The ex-Phoenix Racing car was entered by GMG Racing and driven by Anders Hainer to a respectable eleventh place finish. The other Audi making its debut was the Audi TT RS of Don Istook, a legendary Audi race car builder in America. The car was very new and had small problems all weekend and did very little running, but the white TT RS looked great and would be stronger at the next event.

Round 3: Miller Motorsport Park, Utah
The two Audis would again take part in the third round of the series held in Salt Lake City. The GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS continued to show progress as the team got to know the car. Anders Hainer in the R8 LMS finished in thirteenth place and the Don Istook Audi TT RS finished twenty-sixth overall.

Round 4: Laguna Seca, Monterey
The Pirelli World Challenge's fourth round saw the gird take part at the legendary Laguna Seca race circuit. Two Audi cars were entered for the event, the GMG Audi R8 LMS of Anders Hainer and the Audi TT RS of Don Istook. The GMG R8 LMS finished the race weekend in thirteenth place overall followed by the Istook TT RS in twenty-sixth overall. QuattroWorld.com was present at the event for coverage of the two Audis competing in World Challenge.

Round 5: Belle Island, Detroit
The SCCA Pirelli World Challenge held round five at a very wet Detroit circuit. Both Audis on the grid went well. The GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS claimed its first top ten finish with Anders Hainer claiming tenth spot in race one. The Don Istook Audi TT RS also showed well and scored the Hard charger award in the wet first race by passing multiple cars.

After round 5 the two regular Audi teams did not make the trip up north, skipping the sixth round at Mosport, Canada.

Round 7: Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
The penultimate SCCA World Challenge round was at Mid Ohio. As per usual two Audi cars lined up on the grid, but both had something new in store. GMG Racing were debuting another new Audi R8 LMS at the event, driven by James Sofronas. He showed great pace during the entire weekend by qualifying sixth and scored the best R8 LMS finish to date with fifth in race one. The Don Istook Audi TT RS also did well and boasted a newly updated aerodynamic and exhaust set up.

Round 8: Sears Point, Sonoma
The final round of the American SCCA World Challenge took place at Sears Point. Three Audis were entered for the event. The Don Istook Audi TT RS was entered along with, for the first time, two Audi R8 LMS cars from GMG Racing. Ultimately only one R8 took part in the race, the #40 car of Anders Hainer who finished in the top ten. The Istook TT RS finished eleventh in class.

Editors note: A very special thanks to both GMG Racing and Don Istook for their great support with our Audi coverage of the 2012 Pirelli World Challenge this year.

VLN Endurance Series 2012 Audi season review

By Johan Laubscher and Tarek Ramchani

The 2012 was a great year for the Audi brand in the VLN Endurance Series. No less than three overall victories with the R8 LMS ultra and many other big performances whilst fighting the arch rivals from Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz for races wins each time. Phoenix Racing and Raeder Motorsport were the top Audi representatives in the competition this year. Both teams were able score race victories. The SP4T class was an all Audi affair. The TT RS teams faught each other for class honours as well as for the overall standings and beating cars from upper classes. Here is our complete 2012 season review of the ten rounds.

Round 1: 59. ADAC Westfalenfahrt
The season opener of the 2012 VLN was a very hard one for Audi teams. Three Audi R8 LMS entered the event from Phoenix Racing and the new comers from Raeder Motorsport. The race turned out to be a disastrous one for all three cars. All of them crashed in very difficult weather conditions. The race was later red flagged for the extreme fog. Things were a lot better for the TT RS teams. Raeder Motorsport were unlucky with their Audi R8 LMS ultra but they achieved a 1-2 victory in the SP4T class. The victorious #272 TT RS finished as the best Audi car in an amazing 8th overall, ahead of many top GT3 cars.

Round 2: 37. DMV 4-Stunden-Rennen
At round two it was victory for the FH Köln Motorsport TT RS in the SP4T class with Anja Wassertheurer, Daniela Schmid and Adam Osieka behind the wheel. Three Audis were present in the top class for GT3 machinery. Two Audi R8 LMS cars from Phoenix Racing and Raeder Motorsport. The #15 Phoenix R8 LMS finished 5th and the #44 Raeder R8 LMS finished 15th. Mamerow Racing entered their #14 R8 LMS ultra but unfortunately did not start the race after an accident on Friday. There was a total of eleven Audis in the race, three R8s, three of the SP4T TT RS cars and then also a combination of other TT RS, TTS, TT, A4 and A3 cars.

Round 3: 54. ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup
The third round of the VLN series is traditionally the warm up event for the Nurburgring 24 Hours. As such the grid was packed and there was no shortage of Audi cars. Seven Audi R8 LMS cars were entered from Audi Sport Team Phoenix, W Racing Team (WRT), Audi race experience (TKL Motorsport), Raeder Motorsport and Mamerow Racing. In the end the #5 Audi Sport Team Phoenix R8 LMS ultra of Christopher Mies and Markus Winkelhock finished second overall and the #15 Phoenix car in fourth. The #272 Raeder Motorsport Audi TT RS won the SP4T class. There were seventeen Audis in the race.

Round 4: 43. Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy
The first VLN round after the 2012 Nürburgring 24 Hours had a familiar winner. The Bilstein Phoenix Audi R8 LMS ultra of Marc Basseng and Frank Stippler dominated the weekend. The winners of the Nürburgring 24 Hours won the race followed by their Phoenix teammates in third. The Audi TT RS cars took a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the SP4T class. A total of twelve Audis were in the race.

Round 5: 52. ADAC Reinoldus-Langstreckenrennen
At round five three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars were at the event. Unfortunately the two Phoenix Racing cars retired from the race but there was success for the third car from Raeder Motorsport. The Raeder car put aside its recent bad luck to claim third place during the race. The Raeder team also took victory in the SP4T class with the Audi TT RS. In total eleven Audi cars took part in the event.

Round 6: 35. RCM DMV Grenzlandrennen
The sixth VLN round saw the Phoenix Racing pairing of Marc Basseng and Frank Stippler do it again in their Audi R8 LMS ultra. The pair who together won the fourth round of the series again stepped onto the top of the podium after an amazing comeback drive. The SP4T class was once again won by the Raeder Motorsport Audi TT RS. A total of nine Audi race cars took part in the event.

Round 7: 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen
The six hour Pokal VLN event played host to round seven of the series. Five Audi R8 LMS ultra cars lined up for the race and they did not disappoint. The Raeder Motorsport team continued their good showing by placing second overall ahead of the Audi Sport Team Phoenix cars in third and sixth. There was also Audi success in the SP4T class, but not by one of the usual TT RS cars. It was a debut win for the Brandl Motorsport team and their privately built Audi TT RS which survived the six hours to take the class victory.

Round 8: 44. ADAC Barbarossapreis
The eighth round of the VLN series proved to be very successful for the Audi brand. An overall 1-2 finish with the Audi R8 LMS ultra teams and another SP4T class victory for the TT RS. Raeder Motorsport were in top form this weekend. The team has had a resurgence during the last few rounds as they put their start of season bad luck behind them. Raeder stormed through the race and lead the #15 Phoenix Racing Audi over the line for victory, completing the 1-2 Audi finish. FH Köln Motorsport achieved the victory in the SP4T class in their red and white TT RS. In total thirteen Audis took part in the race. This weekend also marked the debut of another Audi R8 LMS Team, Twin Busch Motorsport who debuted their car at the green hell.

Round 9: ROWE 250-Meilen-Rennen
It was a very busy weekend for the Audi R8 LMS ultra drivers across Europe with the FIA GT1, ADAC GT Masters and French GT. As a result there were many driver shuffles, especially in the VLN were Phoenix Racing’s line-up looked very different with Frank Biela joining the squad this weekend. The VLN event was round nine of the series, the ROWE 250-Meilen Race. It was a hard race for the R8 LMS ultra teams as the highest finisher was the #5 Phoenix car in tenth place. The Raeder Motorsport TT RS #272 did very well as they finished in eighth overall and first in the SP4T class.

Round 10: 37. DMV Münsterlandpokal
The finale of the VLN turned into a very cold and snowy weekend. The event was eventually cancelled for safety seasons due to the very dangerous conditions. A variety of Audi cars were entered for this weekend, including a large number of Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. That event marked the final round of the 2012 VLN season.

Editors note: A very special thanks to our friend Norbert Kratz for the great photos all season long.

Video: Onboard the 034Motorsport TT RS - POV

By Johan Laubscher

The 034 Motorsport TT RS competed in the 2012 Thunderhill 25 Hours this weekend. It was the race debut of the VLN TT RS in North America. The car had great pace and attracted a lot of attention during the weekend.

Here is a very unique onboard video. The camera is mounted on the driver’s helmet and it gives us a point of view (POV) experience of the TT RS with the car arriving, the driver change and then a few laps onboard the car. Enjoy the glorious sound of that five cylinder turbo.
